What does an Osteopathic
Consultation involve?

Our osteopathic consultations take approximately 40 minutes to complete. A consultation involves taking a history of your complaint, a physical examination (including the use of specific orthopaedic tests to help identify the possible cause of your complaint) and treatment using hands-on techniques.

How do osteopaths treat?

A range of gentle hands-on techniques are used to adjust and balance the body, these include soft-tissue massage, joint mobilisation and articulation, muscle and connective tissue stretching and gentle joint manipulation. Osteopaths try to identify the cause of your pain.

Osteopaths aim to identify the cause of your complaint – this includes identifying the tissue that may be causing your symptoms and also distinguishing lifestyle factors that are aggravating the complaint to prevent the problem recurring.

Your Osteopath will work with you to improve work ergonomics, posture, sleeping styles and other bad habits you may have.

Osteopaths also teach and guide you through stretching, strengthening and relaxation exercises to maintain and improve the progress you are achieving with treatment and rehabilitate an injured body part. Exercise programs are specifically tailored to each individual case.

They may also work in conjunction with other practitioners, such as, podiatrists, exercise physiologists, naturopaths and dieticians. This may include updating your GP or other relevant specialists.

Do I need a referral from a GP?
